The heads of Italy’s research institutions (INGV, CNR, INFN, SZN, OGS, ISPRA, ENEA, CONISMA) met on Jan 20th, 2016 at the headquarters of Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology (INGV) in Rome, to ratify the establishment of the Joint Research Unit (JRU) EMSO Italy.

The JRU EMSO Italy is a coordination structure which brings together Italian research institutions and universities who will pool human resources and equipment to monitor European seas. The objective is to provide Italian and European marine scientists with technologically advanced infrastructures in order to study long-term time series of data about the European marine environment and for detecting natural and man-induced changes and hazards related to climate and biodiversity.

The JRU is an unprecedented commitment by major Italian research institutions and universities to join forces in the field of marine sciences and it will allow Italy to maintain a leading role in the European Research Infrastructure EMSO.
