Prof. Juan Jose Dañobeitia, internationally-renowned Spanish scientist, is the first Director General of EMSO ERIC, the new European Marine Research Infrastructure consortium. The Government representatives of the eight Member Countries of EMSO chose Professor Dañobeitia from among more than 80 high-quality candidates for his unique blend of scientific, managerial and academic experience and his deep first-hand knowledge of the ocean observing landscape. In his new role as Director General at EMSO-ERIC headquarters in Rome (Italy), Professor Dañobeitia leads a powerful new European research infrastructure which is poised to become the main reference point and the coordination hub for fixed-point ocean observations in Europe and on intetnational scale. As such, he will be responsible for the start-up of EMSO ERIC, as a distributor of high-quality, free-access marine scientific data and advanced services in environmental issues such as Global Change, Marine Ecosystems, Geological Risks of Tsunamis and Earthquakes, among others for a multiplicity of users; scientists, industry, government officials, environmental policies and the general public.
Juanjo Dañobeitia – Short CV
Professor of Marine Geophysics at the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) whose he headed the prestigious Marine Technology Unit from 2002 to 2012, he is expert in marine science and ocean observatories and has over 30 years experience in the management of large national and international research projects in marine science and technology. He is author or co-author of over 150 peer-reviewed publications, he has taught at leading Universities and Technological Centres throughout Europe including at the University and Polytechnic of Barcelona, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, ETH Zurich (Switzerland), Cambridge and Oxford Universities (UK), the University of Utrecht (Netherlands), Ifremer (France) and Geomar (Germany).
