EMSO ERIC took part in the European Ocean Days 2026 (Brussels, 2–6 March 2026), a week-long series of sessions bringing together policy makers, scientists, industry and stakeholders around a shared vision for a prosperous, secure and sustainable ocean.
A highlight for EMSO: during the Ocean Days, EMSO was mentioned as a great example of collaboration with the private sector, notably through our work on submarine SMART Cables.
In particular, EMSO’s Western Ionian Sea facility has achieved a major milestone with the world’s first prototype deployment and operation of SMART cable since December 2023, demonstrating how integrating geophysical sensors into repeaters can open new perspectives for deep-ocean monitoring and data delivery from the seafloor to land. The achievement has been possible thanks to the collaboration between INGV with the companies GURALP and ELETTRA TLC.
