How to cite EMSO

This webpage guides you through the essential elements of proper attribution: citations, references, and acknowledgements and guides when and how to use each one effectively in your scientific publications, presentations, posters, reports, and projects.

Citations, References, and Acknowledgements: A Matter of Purpose

  • Citation: this is a brief acknowledgement placed within the text of your writing that indicate where specific information or ideas originated, or that you have used someone else’s work. It may be in the author-date format (e.g., [Author], [Date of publication]) or in numeric format (e.g. [1].)
  • Reference: each citation should have a corresponding full reference, which provides further details about the source of information you have used. Usually, the reference is found at the end of your document (reference list), and include author’s name, date of publication, title, publisher details, and a URL/DOI if accessed online.
  • Acknowledgement: it is used to express gratitude to individuals or organizations that contributed to your research or contributing in the writing process of your material. This could include mentors, funding bodies, or colleagues. In research papers, the acknowledgements section is usually placed at the end of the paper, before the references or any appendices.

All research outputs realized using EMSO ERIC data, services, tools, shall mention EMSO ERIC in acknowledgement as follows: 

“This work benefited from the data produced and collected by/ access to the [EMSO Site], an EMSO-[Name of the national joint research Unit – if any] and EMSO-ERIC [Site], operated by [Name of EMSO Member/s]. 

Example: “This work benefited from access to Western Ionian Sea, an EMSO-IT and EMSO-ERIC Site, operated by INGV, INFN. 

If your research work was financially funded or co-funded by EMSO ERIC, please mention EMSO ERIC as follows:

“This research was financially supported by EMSO ERIC”.
