From June 6 to 8, 2026, on the occasion of World Oceans Day (WOD) established by the United Nations, INGV organized the 2026 edition of “Giornata Mondiale degli Oceani – Conoscere, Comprendere, Convivere” (World Oceans Day: Know, Comprehend, Coexist). The exciting event offered three days of immersive scientific dissemination and educational experiences focused entirely on our oceans.
A Prestigious Recognition
The event boasted a prestigious award conferred in Italy: the Medal of the President of the Republic. This honor confirmed the deep appreciation of the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, for the significant scientific and cultural value of the initiative curated by INGV. Furthermore, the event received official endorsement as a Decade Activity by the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development.
Exhibits, interactive laboratories, talk shows, games, and artistic installations welcomed visitors in the spectacular setting of the heart of the Ligurian capital, Genoa. Following the institutional opening ceremony at Palazzo Tursi, activities moved to Largo Pertini.
EMSO’s Contribution
During the three-day event in Genoa, EMSO ERIC and the Joint Research Unit EMSO Italia, the scientific research collaboration uniting Italian research institutions, offered participants an immersive look into the vital role of ocean observing systems. The joint presence successfully highlighted the crucial contribution of the Italian scientific community to the broader European marine research landscape.
