From 6 to 8 June 2026, on the occasion of World Oceans Day (WOD) established by the United Nations, INGV is organizing the 2026 edition of the “Giornata Mondiale degli Oceani – Conoscere, Comprendere, Convivere” (World Oceans Day: Know, Comprehend, Coexist). This exciting event offers three days of immersive scientific dissemination and educational experiences focused on the oceans.

This year the event boasts one prestigious award conferred in Italy, the Medal of the President of the Republic. It confirms the appreciation of the Head of State, Sergio Mattarella, for the particular scientific and cultural interest of the event curated by INGV. This event received the endorsement of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development as a Decade Activity.

Exhibits, laboratories, talk shows, games, and artistic installations await you in the spectacular setting of the heart of the Ligurian capital, Genoa. Following the institutional opening at Palazzo Tursi, the activities will move to Largo Pertini, where a free-admission “Villaggio del Mare” (Sea Village) will be set up.

During the three-day event in Genoa, EMSO ERIC and the Joint Research Unit EMSO Italia, the scientific research collaboration uniting Italian research institutions and universities, will offer participants an immersive experience into the central role of the observing systems and highlight the contribution of the Italian scientific community to the European marine research landscape.
