10 Years of EMSO Science: Observing the Changing Ocean

EMSO ERIC celebrates ten years as a European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC), marking a decade of sustained commitment to advancing ocean observation, FAIR data sharing, and understanding the changing marine environment.

Over the past ten years, EMSO’s distributed infrastructure of multidisciplinary seafloor and water-column observatories has provided long-term, high-quality observations from the ocean surface to the deep sea, supporting scientific discovery, technological innovation, ocean literacy, and international collaboration.

 

Please note: The broader 10th Anniversary celebration spans two full days (15–16 December 2026) at the Barceló Roma Hotel (Rome, Italy). While Day 1 (15 Dec) is dedicated to the Science Day, Day 2 (16 Dec) will host a morning Info Session Day and an afternoon Official Anniversary Ceremony. One Unified Form, Two Options

To streamline planning, we have launched a single online form structured in two parts. Whether you wish to attend as a regular participant or present your work, you are requested to fill out this form before September 15th:

  • Part 1 (For everyone interested in attending the event): Expression of Interest to signal your attendance (essential for preliminary logistics and venue capacity planning).
  • Part 2 (Optional): Abstract Submission for those who wish to present during the Science Day. If you only wish to attend, you can simply skip this second section.

Please note: This initial form is strictly for preliminary logistics and abstract collection. A formal registration will open around the second half of September, and you will need to register to confirm your details and book your seat.

 

The objective of the Science Day is to highlight ten years of scientific achievements and technological innovation enabled by EMSO and the broader ocean observing community, while creating a forum for sharing results, exchanging knowledge, and discussing the future challenges of ocean and Earth multidisciplinary system research. By bringing together scientists, engineers, and early-career researchers, the event aims to foster dialogue, strengthen cooperation, and promote greater integration across disciplines, infrastructures, and observing systems.

 

The programme will be organised around three broad scientific themes:

Ocean Dynamics: Exploring ocean variability across spatial and temporal scales, including physical, biogeochemical, and climate-related processes, ocean circulation, air-sea interactions, and the ocean carbon cycle.

Biodiversity: Advancing our understanding of marine biodiversity, ecosystem functioning, resilience, and long-term change, from pelagic and benthic ecosystems to their responses to natural and anthropogenic pressures.

Geophysics: Investigating geophysical processes and natural hazards, including seismic and volcanic activity, tectonics, submarine fluid emissions, deep carbon processes, and emerging technologies for Earth system monitoring.

 

Expression of Interest and Abstract

Authors are invited to submit their abstracts through the online submission platform by 15th September 2026 (23:59 CEST).

 

Conference Outcomes

All accepted abstracts will be published in a dedicated conference proceedings collection, showcasing the scientific results, technological developments, and societal impacts presented at the EMSO ERIC 10th Anniversary Conference. The proceedings will contribute to documenting the achievements of the past decade while fostering future collaboration within the ocean science community.

We look forward to receiving contributions based on EMSO observations, EMSO facilities, or other sustained ocean observing systems, celebrating together ten years of EMSO science.

 

Submission Guidelines

  • Abstracts must be submitted in English. 
  • Abstracts should be between 400 and 500 words. 
  • The title should be concise and informative. 
  • Authors must indicate the relevant scientific themes (Ocean Dynamics, Biodiversity, or Geophysics ).
  • Authors may include one figure (PNG or JPEG format) with a short caption. The figure will not count towards the word limit. 
  • Up to three bibliographic references may be included and will not count towards the word limit. 
  • All submissions will be evaluated by the Scientific Committee based on scientific quality, originality, relevance to the conference themes, and overall programme balance. 
  • Due to the limited number of speaking slots, only a selected number of contributions will be allocated to oral presentations. All other accepted contributions will be presented as posters. 
  • Particular consideration will be given to contributions from  Early-Career Researchers (ECRs) to encourage the participation and visibility of the next generation of ocean scientists. 
  • Accepted abstracts will be published in the  EMSO ERIC 10th Anniversary Conference Proceedings, providing a lasting record of the scientific and technological advances presented during the event.
