Call for Abstracts

Evaluating and Expanding Ocean Sound Research Across the EMSO Infrastructure

We invite key EMSO members, external researchers, experts, and interested stakeholders to submit their proposals and present their work as part of the upcoming EMSO Ocean Sound Webinar Series.

This initiative aims to evaluate current community interest in ocean sound studies and explore how EMSO can strategically expand its efforts on this critical topic. By addressing key areas, such as the implementation of sound processing and analysis  services and acoustic projects for marine mammal detection, or geophysics questions or environmental noise monitoring, the webinar series will contribute to developing new research objectives, future visions, technical requirements, and data management strategies.

Format & Structure: Each webinar session will feature selected presentations structured as follows:

  • Presentation: 15 minutes
  • Discussion & Q&A: 10 minutes

Objectives of the Webinar Series:

The main objective of this series is to foster dialogue, exchange technical and scientific knowledge, and build a unified strategy for passive acoustics and ocean sound monitoring across multidisciplinary observatories.

Key topics of interest for contributions include, but are not limited to:

  • Ocean Noise Monitoring: Ambient noise baselines, soundscape analysis, and anthropogenic noise pollution (Passive Acoustics).
  • Bioacoustics and Biodiversity: Acoustic tracking, species identification, marine mammal detection, and ecosystem health indicators.
  • Geophysics and Acoustic Sensing: Seismic, volcanic, and seafloor process monitoring using passive and active acoustic techniques.
  • Acoustic Data Management and Infrastructure: Processing pipelines, FAIR data strategies, hydrophone deployments, and hardware integration.

Submission Guidelines:

  • Language: Abstracts must be submitted in English.
  • Length: Descriptions must not exceed 2,000 characters (spaces included).

    • Presentation Title and primary topic selection
    • Abstract description
    • Preferred timeframe/window for presentation and preferred role
    • Required consent for live recording and publishing of materials
